This is often where I start the conversation when someone tells me they're visiting Costa Rica for the first time. The Pacific side tends to offer more familiar resort choices, smoother logistics, and a wider mix of beach towns, adventure hubs, and polished stays. If you want to pair a resort on the coast with inland time in Arenal, it's usually straightforward to build a two-region Costa Rica itinerary that makes sense.
That doesn't automatically make it the right choice for everyone. Some travelers end up loving Costa Rica because they ventured beyond the side that gets the most attention.

The Caribbean Coast: Costa Rica's Best-Kept Secret?
Every time I visit Costa Rica's Caribbean side, I'm reminded how different it feels from the rest of the country. The pace is different. The culture is different. Even the vibe feels different. It's the kind of place that tends to attract travelers looking for something a little less expected.
The Caribbean Coast feels more local, more colorful, and in many places a little less polished in the conventional luxury-resort sense. That's exactly what some travelers love about it. Puerto Viejo, Cahuita, and the surrounding area tend to stick in the memory for travelers who care more about atmosphere and character than checking off the most famous destinations. The Mistake I See Travelers Make
A lot of travelers assume they should visit whichever coast has the most famous destinations. That's not always the best approach. Just because a destination is popular doesn't mean it's the best fit for your vacation goals.
I've had clients initially gravitate toward just the Pacific coast, only to completely change direction after we talked through what they actually wanted from the trip. Sometimes the answer surprises them. Sometimes it surprises me too.
