What a Solo River Cruise Actually Costs

The number that scares people off solo cruising usually isn't the total. It's the single supplement, and most travelers have no idea there are alternatives.

Almost every solo traveler who tells me they've priced out a river cruise says some version of the same thing: the moment they added a single cabin, the total practically doubled. That reaction isn't imagined. It's just not the whole story anymore, and I think more solo travelers should know that before they cross river cruising off the list entirely.

A single supplement is what most cruise lines charge a solo traveler on top of the standard per-person rate, since the cabin was priced assuming two people would split it. It's a real cost the cruise line has to recoup somehow. But it's also become the default reason people assume solo cruising is a bad value, when the real answer depends entirely on which sailing you're looking at.

What "No Single Supplement" Actually Means

A handful of cruise lines now run sailings built specifically for solo travelers, priced at true solo occupancy from the start instead of a discounted version of a double rate. No supplement to negotiate, no waiting for a sale that waives it, and no cabin categories quietly excluded from the deal.

That's a meaningfully different product from a regular sailing where solo travelers get squeezed into whatever inventory is left. On a dedicated solo sailing, every cabin on the ship is priced and sold the same way, which also means the ship fills with people who came the same way you did, alone and on purpose.

What a Real Sailing Looks Like

There's a Christmas market river cruise this year along the Rhine where every single passenger is a solo traveler. Five days through Germany: Cologne, the Rhine Gorge, Rüdesheim, Bonn, and back to Cologne for seven Christmas markets, including the market beneath the cathedral, where the largest Christmas tree in the Rhineland is lit with 50,000 LED lights.

The fare is everything included at solo occupancy: five-star ship, full board dining, all-inclusive drinks, and five guided experiences, including a Rhine Gorge cable car, Siegfried's Mechanical Music Cabinet, and a live Rhenish folklore show on board. No single supplement added on top.

Start Planning

What "Everything Included" Still Doesn't Include

The cruise fare covers the ship, the meals, the drinks, and the excursions built into the itinerary. It doesn't get you to the ship. Flights, a pre-cruise hotel night in the embarkation city, and airport transfers are usually separate, and skipping that planning is the fastest way to land in port exhausted and jet-lagged the same day your trip is supposed to start (Please don't do that!).

This is the part I handle for clients booking these sailings: flights timed to actually work with your embarkation, a hotel night in Cologne beforehand so no one is racing off a red-eye straight onto a ship, and transfers arranged so the whole trip feels seamless from the front door to the gangway, not just from the gangway on.

The single supplement was never really about the cost of the cabin. It's about who the pricing was built for in the first place.

My Advisor Take

I've booked half a dozen clients onto the same sailing this 2026 season, and the pricing conversation has been the easiest part of every one of those calls. Nobody had to talk themselves into paying double to travel alone, because that math never came up. The harder question was almost always about flights and logistics, which is exactly the part I'm there for.

If a single supplement is the only reason you've ruled out a solo river cruise, it's worth asking what a dedicated solo sailing would actually cost before you assume the answer. It's often a very different number than the one that scared you off in the first place.

Best For

Solo travelers who've priced out river cruising before and were put off by the single supplement, and want to know what a sailing built for solo travelers actually costs.
