I hear some version of “I just want the little hut over the water” from clients all the time, and I never try to talk anyone out of it. Clear water right under your feet, a private deck, coffee you drink practically floating over the lagoon, no shoes for the better part of a week. Hard to argue with any of it.
But the Caribbean and the Maldives aren't the same trip in two different locations. They both have villas that sit over water, sure. Everything else, the flight, the resort setup, how private it actually feels once the door closes, the cost, the whole pace of the days, can end up worlds apart.
The Maldives Is the Classic Overwater Experience
When people picture an overwater bungalow, they're usually picturing the Maldives without even realizing it. Most resorts have an entire private island to themselves, the water is the star of the show, and the trip is very resort-centered, because that's the whole point of going.
It's a wonderful fit if what you want is quiet, real privacy, and a pace slow enough that you forget what day it is. It's a rough fit if you were hoping for shopping, nightlife, or dinner anywhere other than the resort. That's just not what the Maldives is for.
The Caribbean Is Easier to Reach, but More Limited
Caribbean overwater bungalows can be gorgeous, especially for travelers who want that same novelty without giving up a full day to flying. For most of my U.S. clients, the shorter flight is one of the biggest selling points.
The tradeoff: there are far fewer true overwater properties down there, and they cluster around a handful of specific resort brands, and sometimes they sit on a stretch of water that just isn't worth it. So I check availability, pricing, the actual room layout, the water, the privacy, and the real view before anyone assumes their room will look like the marketing photo. Sometimes it does. In one specific case (a resort I would NEVER send you to) the rooms face a seaweed barrier that doesn't show up in any official photos online.

What the Photos Don't Show You
Not every overwater bungalow is as private as you may be hoping for. Some face open water, some face a quiet lagoon, some are basically staring into the villa next door, close enough to wave to your neighbors. Boat traffic, resort noise, a walkway right outside the window: these things vary villa by villa, not just resort by resort.
The deck might get full sun or full shade. The ladder might drop into water that's murky instead of crystal clear. Not all of that shows up on a hotel website, but a knowledgeable advisor can help you navigate the differences.
So I don't let clients book off the room name. “Overwater bungalow” sounds specific. What you actually get depends on the exact category, and more often than people expect, the villa number.
Flight Time Changes the Whole Trip
Five or six nights? The Caribbean usually wins, because more of that time gets spent actually being there instead of getting there. The Maldives is for when you can make a bigger travel commitment, and I build those trips with enough nights that you're not recovering from the flights for the whole week you were supposed to be enjoying it.
None of that means the Maldives is too far. It means the trip deserves the right length, the right routing, and sometimes a stopover built in on purpose.
My Advisor Take
If the villa is the entire reason for the trip, I start with the Maldives, most of the time when you have the time to spare. If you want a shorter trip, an easier flight, or a Caribbean island that still gives you a gorgeous room without the long haul, the Caribbean can be the better answer. Not because it's less impressive but because it's built for a different kind of traveler.
I don't compare these two on nightly rate alone, and I'd tell you not to either. Total travel time, transfer style, meal plan, the privacy, the resort's overall atmosphere, the weather window, how much you actually care about ever leaving the property. Line those up side by side before making a decision.
I planned a honeymoon last year for a couple who had their hearts set on an overwater bungalow but only 7 nights to work with. Given how little time they had, I steered them toward the Caribbean instead of the Maldives so they wouldn't lose two full days to flights. They still got their overwater villa moment without spending a third of the trip in transit.
Overwater bungalows are a splurge. When an entire trip is built around one room category, the details matter more than usual, and that's exactly where a little extra planning earns its keep.
