Why an African Safari Belongs at the Top of the List

An African safari is the trip that most experienced travelers describe as the one that reset their expectations for what travel could be, not because of the logistics or the luxury, though both are genuinely exceptional at the top end, but because of the wildlife encounters themselves. Watching a pride of lions at dawn from a Land Rover with your coffee in hand is the kind of thing that sounds clichéd until you're actually doing it, at which point you understand completely why people come back year after year.

The safari market has also matured significantly in terms of luxury product. Private tented camps in the Serengeti and Okavango Delta now routinely offer the kind of service and design that rivals the world's top hotels, with the added factor of waking up to absolute wilderness. It's not a compromise. It's an upgrade. For travelers who want something similarly unforgettable but more romance-forward, I also love pointing them to uncrowded romantic destinations where the setting does a lot of the work.

The planning complexity is real, which is why most first-time safari travelers get better outcomes working with an advisor. Country selection, camp selection, timing relative to the migration, and the internal flight logistics between camps all require knowledge that a hotel search can't provide.

Best Time to Go on Safari

Jul to Oct

Dry Season

Best for game viewing. Animals congregate around water, vegetation is lower, and predator activity is highest. Great Migration river crossings happen July to August in the Masai Mara.

Jan to Feb

Calving Season

Wildebeest calving in the Serengeti. Exceptional for predator activity and a different but equally compelling migration experience.

Mar to May

Green Season

Lush landscapes, excellent birdlife, and significantly lower rates. Fewer vehicles in the bush. A genuinely underrated window for experienced safari travelers.

Nov to Dec

Short Rains

Brief rainfall and lower rates. Good for photography with dramatic skies. Wildlife is dispersed but present.

Advisor Note

The Great Migration river crossings in the Masai Mara happen in a narrow window between July and August. Miss it by two weeks and you've missed the most dramatic wildlife spectacle on earth. Tanzania's Serengeti offers calving season in January and February as a compelling alternative. Book both well ahead, since the top camps in peak season fill 12 to 18 months out.

Kenya and Tanzania: The Classic Safari Experience

Kenya and Tanzania together form the classic East African safari circuit. The Masai Mara in Kenya and the Serengeti in Tanzania are contiguous ecosystems that together host the Great Migration, the largest movement of animals on earth, with roughly 1.5 million wildebeest moving in a continuous loop following the rains.

Beyond the migration, both countries offer extraordinary big five game viewing year-round. Amboseli in Kenya for elephants against Kilimanjaro. The Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania for the highest density of large predators anywhere in Africa. The northern circuit in Tanzania for genuine remoteness.

Botswana and South Africa: The Luxury Safari Benchmark

Botswana has deliberately positioned itself as Africa's premier low-volume, high-value safari destination. The government limits tourism numbers and charges accordingly, which means the camps are exceptional and the game viewing is uncrowded in a way that Kenya and Tanzania's more popular circuits simply can't match.

South Africa adds another dimension entirely: Cape Town, the Winelands, and world-class safari in the Kruger and Sabi Sands regions all within one itinerary. It's the only country in Africa where a safari-and-city combination trip is truly seamless, and direct flights from the US make it more accessible than most people realize.
